At lunch today I decided to read the Onion, http://www.theonion.com and I came across “6-Year-Old Stares Down Bottomless Abyss Of Formal Schooling.” While the article is hilarious it did get me thinking about what an insane amount of time we spend in things like school and work to prepare ourselves for a few years of retirement before we kick the bucket. Don’t take this post the wrong way I actually thought school was a blast and I will probably work in one way or another until he day I die. That being said we need to make sure that we are having fun along the way and more importantly so are our kids.
Our kids are going to spend and an insane amount of time doing things that frankly are pretty boring. They will have to sit in class, do homework, and sit through family reunions. They will be asked to grow up quickly and be responsible. Planning for the future will start almost immediately and they will be asked what they want to be when they grow up from day one. I’m getting exhausted just thinking about the daunting task kids have in front of them just like the satirical article points out.
What are we going to do about this? First off let’s have some fun and delay growing up as long as we can. Let your kids be kids and find fun and exciting things for them to do. Let them play, and play right along with them! Yes we want them prepared for the future but at what cost? As we all send our kids off towards the bottomless abyss let’s make sure there are lots of bright spots along the way.
