Lessons Learned: Power Outage

I am currently sitting in a naturally lit kitchen as I wait out a power outage that has been going on for a couple days now. The good news is repair crews are in our area so with any luck I will soon have heat and WIFI so I can make this post. It is easy to take our world for granted. Things like lights, refrigerators, running water, etc. are all modern amenities that we expect to just be there. When they disappear in the blink of an eye we are forced to adapt.

This got me thinking about how good humans can be at adapting to situations and how often we resist it at all costs. Our world changes so quickly now that if you don’t adapt you get left in the dust. You have seen it in your small local businesses and we have all seen it in giant companies as large and small become irrelevant because they did not adapt. We have also seen the total opposite in the people that have embraced the change. They adapt not when forced like when the lights go out but as they see the coming change. They create a flexibility in their world that not only allows for but embraces the opportunity to adapt. The changing world is what creates the opportunity to set themselves apart.

Whether you are starting a business, trying to move up the ranks at work, attempting to make the correct investment decisions, or you just want to keep up with the new apps on your kids’ phone, be ready to adapt. Learn to pay attention to change and create a world and mindset that embraces it. How can you be prepared so that as situations change you can thrive? We are in the midst of a lot of change right now and those that adapt quickly will find great opportunity and those that don’t will be left behind.

I guess what I’m trying to say is instead of sitting around in the dark hoping your freezer doesn’t melt, adapt like my neighbor and buy a generator!
