Present: Year in Review

My word of the year for 2019 was Present. The idea was to be more focused on being in the moment. Setting aside distractions so that I was really being engaged in what was going on. I wanted to be more present when spending time with family, working, exercising, etc. Whatever I was doing I wanted to really be doing it. So how did it go? If I’m being honest it went, OK.

There were absolutely times where I thought specifically about my word of the year being present and I would focus on what I was supposed to be fully engaged in. There were also lots of times where I realized this in hindsight. It is so easy to fall into hold habits of looking at the phone, staring at the TV, or finding some other thing to be a distraction. In my case most shiny objects are distracting so staying in the present is a challenge to say the least.

2019 was a very eventful year which resulted in it being a great year but also a very distracting year. There were times where there was so much going on, I would totally lose sight of my word of the year and be anywhere but in the present. I would be focusing on the past, future, and the ten things I needed to do while totally losing sight of the present.

Having the word in the back of my mind was useful for refocusing my efforts but it is something that I will need keep in my pocket for 2020. My goal is to turn being present into a habit. With my personality this may be a challenge but I’m up for it!

Let me know if you had a word for 2019 and how it went. 2020’s word of the year is coming in few weeks!

I would also like to take this post to thank all of you that have taken the time to read my blog this year. I am flattered by the responses and will continue to do my best to come up with fresh content and improve my writing. I have some new things planned for next year that I hope you will enjoy!
