How I’m Laughing

I’ve always been a fan of comedy, from sitcoms and movies to the funny pages and joke books, but lately I’ve been focusing on consuming more content that makes me laugh. In a recent conversation with stand-up comedian Mark Cordes on episode 81 of Drip Trickle Flow Flood, we talked about how important laughter is for our overall health and how it doesn’t get enough credit for making our bodies feel good. I learned about Mark when I walked into a comedy show on a cruise, and he was the performer. Halfway through his set, I was crying with laughter, and I knew I needed to get him on the podcast.

I love getting recommendations from people, so here are some unsolicited recommendations on what’s making me laugh right now. Feel free to let me know what has you rolling on the floor with laughter.

I’m going to start with Duck Town Weekly, a newspaper created by Erik Durban that is seven days of comics and games. I stumbled on this paper about a year ago, and I knew I had found a new daily habit. It has led me to other material by Todd Webb, who created The Poet, and Dave Coverly, the creator of Speed Bump. Dave just released the book, My Support Dog Ate My Comfort Food, which is nothing but dog comics, which is the latest addition of funny reading material to our household. I have now made it a habit to read comics first thing in the morning and right before bed, so I start and end each day with a laugh. All three of those guys were on Drip Trickle Flow Flood, too. Erik was episode 34, Todd episode 39, and Dave episode 71.

I’m also watching some hilarious stuff right now. With my wife, I’m watching season four of Ted Lasso, which the writers and actors are once again making me laugh out loud. As a family, we are watching Modern Family, which I didn’t watch when it first came out, and our daughter actually suggested we watch it now. It is laugh-out-loud funny, and now I’m the one trying to get my daughter to watch more TV so we can continue with the series. On my own, I’m watching SCTV, which is currently on Netflix. I’ve seen bits of this in the past, but most of it is new to me, even though it started in the 70s. The cast includes John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, among other comedy legends.

Finally, I’ve been fortunate to see some stand-up in person lately. I saw Mark on the cruise ship, and then the Acme Diner hosted a comedy night, which was great, and they have another one coming up in November. While it’s great to laugh on my couch, there is nothing quite like being with a group of people while someone makes you laugh in real life, so if you have the chance, I highly suggest getting yourself to a stand-up comedy show.

While it has never been easier to find the negative stuff in the world, it has also never been easier to find the funny stuff, so make it a priority to consume it and share it with others, because life is better when we’re laughing.
